I fly out for Johannesburg* on the 22nd of April. A lot of people have asked me about this trip and I’ve mostly given vague answers, but this is more because I haven’t known the answers.
The original idea was: teach English/learn Chinese in China, but go on a big trip beforehand. I have a thing for overland travel, so I was looking for a long route that connects to China with minimal flights. Africa + Central Asia interested me the most.
It became obvious pretty quick that right now there isn’t any particularly safe route from Sub-Saharan Africa to China, so the plan was to split it up into two legs, roughly:
And I started getting really really excited. I was working full-time hours and getting paid well, so it would be completely do-able. Unfortunately injuries and things happened** so I had to cut it back.
But I had already gotten excited over Africa, so that’s the bit I’m doing! Mostly***.
So what about China and teaching English?
That’s still a thing. In March I did an intensive course called Cambridge CELTA****, so I am qualified for most jobs in China, though I don’t have a degree***** which will make it more difficult.
The 3 options I’m looking at after finishing Africa are:
- I fly straight to China and start working/living there.
- I fly somewhere in the Middle-East and work there for a time, then continue through Central Asia and end up in working/living China.
- I fly home and apply to jobs in China from Australia. Fly back and work/live in China.
3 wasn’t the original plan, but the more I think about it the more I’d be perfectly fine with it and possibly prefer it to 1. 2 is currently the goal though. There are some opportunities for it and I’ll continue to look at that along the trip.
So yeah. Exciting. I’ve done a lot of research, but I still have heaps to do. Not just research, but organising loose ends here at home. I’m worried I’ll miss seeing a lot of people before I leave. Probably why 3 is looking more appealing.
*via like a million other cities. Look forward to those twitter updates.
**this will be covered in Part 2
***The bombings in Kenya are starting to become regular, which could scare me out of going there, but I still would really love to fit Ethiopia in there. We’ll see. It’s a bit open-ended, but I am 100% doing South Africa through to Tanzania which should take at least 3 months.
****Certificate of English Language Teaching to Adults. It was an amazing course. Pretty intense. We had our own class and taught our own lessons and stuff. I was going to devote an entire post to it but decided against it. I’ll probs come back to it.
*****this too will be addressed
So this will be the first of a group of posts I’ve been wanting to do for a while now, years really. It’s pretty personal, so if you don’t know me I can’t imagine it’ll be too interesting.
It’s getting pretty close to being 5 years since we finished school, and although I still see a fair few people from school, barely anyone knows what I’ve been doing in those 5 years in any real detail. Which really doesn’t feel very good. So I want to fix it!
It’s partly because I don’t really tell anyone anything about myself unless they ask, which can be a good thing, but only up to an extent. When I feel I need to write a group of long text posts just to fill my friends in, it’s gone too far.
The other issue is, sometimes when people ask me about what I’ve been doing I avoid the subject or just flat-out lie. I’ve done this quite a bit (not so much recently) because it hasn’t all been smooth sailing. When things haven’t been going well, hanging out with friends is a good way to relax, or a good way to avoid the problems I have/pretend they aren’t there. Often, the best way to avoid further questions about my life, is to lie about it. This also can be ok, but not at the scale I have done it.
So yeah. I haven’t planned this out too much, but I think I’ll go in reverse chronological order and see how far I get before I leave.
Part 1 will be about me leaving.
Oh, and if anyone has any questions along the way I will answer them and not lie. Even if I might just answer privately.
